Trivitron Medical Technologies Park to manufacture world class medical devices to come up in Chennai

A Medical Technology Park spread across an area of 25 acres has been inaugurated at Irungattukottai near Chennai for the indigenous manufacture of world class medical devices. Deputy chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin inaugurated the Park, which is an initiative of Trivitron Healthcare Private Ltd, one of the leading medical technology companies in India.The setting up of the park at Chennai is in line with the government of Tamil Nadu’s initiative of promoting Chennai as a manufacturing hub of medical and pharmaceutical products and equipment.

The Trivitron Medical Technologies Park is designed to house 10 international medical technology manufacturers.“It’s a proud moment for all of us. We are exhilarated that Trivitron has set up the first medical technology park in the region to manufacture an indigenous line of products designed specifically for Indian markets. This is yet another feather in the cap of Tamil Nadu’s healthcare system. Tamil Nadu, as you are all aware, is the leader in healthcare delivery in the country and is the choicest destination for international medical tourism,” said M K Stalin.

National Conference on Medical Devices

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India and National Institute for Pharmaceutical Education & Research are jointly organizing "National Conference on Medical Devices", on 8th October 2009, in FICCI, New Delhi.

The purpose of this conference is:
To provide a platform for all stakeholders to identify the impediments as well as the way forward for India in its journey towards becoming a hub for medical device manufacture.
To encourage Industry participation as a stakeholder to provide inputs in shaping policies to achieve the stated objectives.

Deliberations from this conference would help in fine tuning the initiatives of the government towards capacity building and infrastructure development for medical device sector.

The proposed focus areas for this conference are as follows:

• Enabling Medical Device Manufacturing in India
• Medical Device Quality and Standards
• Challenges in product development and technology transfer
• Capacity Building for medical device industry
• Medical device regulations

This conference is expected to provide critical inputs which will shape the various Government initiatives, and make them more meaningful for the industry to flourish.

Dedicated courses on medical devices sector at NIPER Ahmedabad

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) - Ahmedabad, one of the six new NIPERs established in different parts of the country, is planning to initiate courses to develop human resources to enhance the performance of medical devices industry in the country. The institute will be one of the first to introduce a dedicated course for medical devices technology, according to NIPER sources.

The institute, which is expected to commence operations in next couple of months, has identified the scope of emerging medical devices segment in the country and has plans to set up operations in three specific segments to help the industry. The identified segments are - setting up academic centres, establishing a testing facility for medical devices with testing equipments, testing models for efficacy and quality control studies and building up pre-clinical and clinical study facilities required for medical devices (class 2B and III) for the industry.The institute has recently conducted analysis on the sector to identify the prospects of medical devices industry and need for human resources.

The draft report has been submitted to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the department is seeking feedback from the industry on the report. Based on the feedback the institute will submit its final report to the department which, in turn, is expected to offer additional funds to set up the infrastructure at Ahmedabad to support the medical devices industry, informed Dr Harish Padh, project director, NIPER-Ahmedabad and director, B V Patel Pharmaceutical Education and Research Development (PERD) Centre.
